Updates and Savor Idaho

Hello, everyone!

After a wonderful trip to Italy celebrating 38 years of marriage (and a long recovery from the upper respiratory crud that seems to accompany long travels,) I want to thank our customers and welcome our new accounts for a busy April and May!  As we all gear up for the new season, please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions regarding your wine.

My consultant, Angie Riff, is a local winemaker with degrees in Microbiology and Biochemistry, and ran the lab for a large 100,000+ case winery in Alexander Valley, California for two years before working with Helen Turley of Marcassin in Sonoma County to learn her winemaking skills.  Questions regarding fermentations, residual sugars, sulfurs, etc., are answered in a timely manner, and I look forward to helping you keep your wine in top notch condition through monthly monitoring.

Please don't forget "Savor Idaho" on June 13, 2010 from 2:00 – 6:00 pm at the Botanical Gardens here in Boise.  Visit savoridaho.org for more information.  Moya Shatz and Melissa Witt from the Idaho Grape Growers and Wine Producers Commission work very hard on this event.  Get your limited tickets now!

Thanks again for your support of Wine Wise!  See you soon.

Sawtooth Winery hosting Seminar March 25

Wow, Spring already and don’t forget the time change this weekend!

The annual meeting in February held in Caldwell was a great time to listen  to those in the know about the Idaho Wine Industry.  Moya Shatz and Melissa Witt from the Wine Commission did an excellent job of putting the meeting together.  Good presentations, and a big thank you to Bill Murray from Sawtooth  Winery for putting in a good word about services offered at Wine Wise.

Sawtooth Winery is hosting a Seminar given by Scott Labs on March 25th at the winery with presentations on fermentaion and wine chemistry on March 25.  It should be a great learning experience.  Please feel free to contact me if you need more information.

I am amazed at how quickly the industry is growing in Idaho and the great quality wines that are being produced by the local winemakers.Thank you for a great beginning for Wine Wise, and all your support.  A very special thanks to my consultant, Angie Riff.

Angie will be covering the lab for me March 31 – April 15.  Please contact her during those dates at angie.riff@gmail.com if you need analysis or have any questions.

Happy Spring, Everyone!

Sincerely,

Shauna

Happy 2010 and thank you!

Dear Winemaker,

Happy 2010!  Thank you for your support of Wine Wise during 2009.  I am looking forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting of
the Idaho Grape Growers and Wine Producers Commission on February 24 at the College of Idaho in Caldwell.  Hopefully, you had a successful and busy 2009 Harvest!

After malolactic fermentation is complete, remember to do a monthly health check on your wines!
I recommend a Free SO2 and VA (acetic acid via enzymatic testing.  An enzymatic test for VA (acetic acid) via spectrophotometry is
more accurate that using a cash still.

For pre-bottling, I recommend a VA, TA, ph, Free SO2 and Total SO2.

Thank you again for your support this past year, and I'll look forward to seeing you at the meeting!  If you haven't registered, please
visit http://www.idahowines.org for more information.

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Shauna

Welcome to Wine Wise – a new testing lab for the wine industry located in Boise, ID. With many new winemakers and wineries in Idaho, the need for testing wine is growing!  My name is Shauna Shaltry. I am a retired dental hygienist, an Idaho native, and have been helping winemaker Angie Riff, now at Periple Wines, for the past 7 years during “crush.”   Experience in the wine industry started in Napa Valley while Angie Riff was in CA. She is now in Idaho. When Angie approached me about starting a wine testing lab, it sounded like a great service to offer commercial wineries and hobbyists in Idaho. This is the first independently owned, operated, and insured lab in Idaho dedicated only to winemakers.  Expertise in attention to detail and procedure, sterile technique, and confidentiality, are Important in meeting your lab testing needs for wine . Wine Wise is currently offering testing using spectrophotometry, auto titrators, refractometers and hydrometers. With your support, additional services will be added in the future.

Hours of operation are M-F 7:00 am – 4:00 pm and weekends by appointment during crush.

I offer free pick-up of samples in the Treasure Valley for commercial wineries; requests must be made by 9:00 am for same day pick up. Please call, text, or email by 9:00 am. for commercial winery pickup.

Thank you for visiting Wine Wise! I look forward to hearing from you.
